3rd grade redo!

This is truly sad... Claire is so bright, so capable of achieving wonderful things, and those who read this, know why I say that about her. Claire is a good kid with a great heart, HOWEVER, within the first couple of months that she was transferred to Great Western Academy, she has shown how irresponsible she is. The first couple of weeks, she brought home homework, and even had homework on the weekends. I really felt this was a great move for her, because in all of the other schools, she was never challenged enough. With that being said, she never had to really work for her grades. Now she's in a school that is focused on children within the classroom, and want for them to succeed. This school is challenging and man, to D and I, it's a GREAT thing for her. She needs to be challenged so that she doesn't just skate through life thinking everything is easy. Claire went from pulling 2 B's and 7 A's, to now the only A's she has are elective classes.
Yesterday I finally gave up and walked into Claire's classroom to speak with Claire's main teacher, Ms. Stinziano. I felt it was necessary because my schedule with work is so hectic that the parent teacher conferences conflict with my work schedule. So when I went into speak with her teacher, she was grateful that I was able to talk with her, face to face. Ms. Stinziano told me that Claire doesn't turn in her work, she doesn't turn in her homework, she talks to everyone instead of focusing on her classwork, or any activity that she's in need of completing, and she is just too involved in everyone else's business instead of actually focusing on her own tasks. This short, but informative meeting was very eye-opening. It showed me that the talks that we are having at home to inform her how she needs to improve before it's too late, just isn't processing through her head. Ms. Stinziano also stated that she had given Claire extra work to take home to help improve her test scores and allow her to feel more confident, because in class, if she doesn't understand something, she blurts out "I can't do this! I just don't get it." and follows that by placing her head on her desk and just giving up on what she's supposed to be doing.
Last night I first told Claire that she was to clear out her desk and that she is to have NOTHING but the absolute necessities within it. Then I sat and thought about it, and realized that she was asked to bring things home before, but never had, so it was MY turn to go clear out her desk, since she had been asked so many times before and never brought anything home on her own. So, I told her that I am going to go in with her in the morning and get ALL of the crap out of her desk because someone has to do something to get this through her head. She froze as if she was just told something that she couldn't believe. She was freaking out, and I looked at her and said "You scared, Claire?" She responded with a nod. I then replied with, "If you were to bring home what you've been asked to for months now, then this wouldn't have to happen." She wouldn't speak, she was probably praying that a foot of snow came overnight and that I'd forget about going into her classroom once the snow was cleared.
So, this morning, she was running late and doing EVERYTHING to delay the process of going to school. "Forgetting" things, and dragging her ass with breakfast, instead of eating at normal speed, and walking like she had a load in her pants. I told her she had 20 minutes FROM the time she got out of bed til we had to walk out the door. She, as I said earlier, dragged her feet trying to make herself as delayed as possible, praying that I wouldn't do what I said I was going to. We left here at 7:35am and went to school. When we got there, the kids were already entering the classroom, and I then informed her, "Now all of your classmates get to see you clearing out your desk. Had you not dragged your ass this morning then you wouldn't have to be embarrassed like that." When we got into the classroom, I said to Ms. Stinziano, "Twice in two days you have gotten to see me.", she replied with, "YeaaaaaaaaaH!" I told her that I was there to clear out Claire's desk of all of the unnecessary clutter and work that she claims to either never gotten, or have turned in. So, Claire took her coat off slowly and walked around the classroom slowly, then we got to her desk and she had papers on her desk from yesterday's classwork, and she "gets distracted" and started fiddling with everything on her desk, instead of what was INSIDE.  Finally, she begins to clear out her desk, but in this "organized" fashion, which was OBVIOUSLY not what her desk was in prior to her attempt to delay this process. I told her I wanted EVERYTHING except for the workbooks that she uses for classwork along with her binder (with lined paper only) for handwriting. She had 6 folders overflowing with papers within each of them, all different subjects thrown into one, instead of subjects being organized in each folder. Then Ms. Stinziano asked me if she gave me the note that was attached to her homework last night. Hmmmmm, uhhh, no!? Apparently Claire had to redo classwork because of how poorly she did on the first attempt in the classroom, so Ms. Stinziano allowed her to take it home and redo it and then she'd be able to get the higher of the two grades applied to her grades for that project. Here is a picture of what all came out from her desk:

There is a minimum of 30 pages of homework, just for math. Then at least 20 pages of classwork that's unfinished. Then 4-5 pages of English homework that she's never brought home along with Social Studies, which is where her F has been due to not turning in her classwork or homework. With the ability to see Claire's grades online, I see what's been missing and what she has done. Now, every time I've brought any of her assignments that don't have grades on in, she claims that she had, OR that she never got the assignment and she doesn't know what I'm talking about.
Derrick and I have given her several warnings about how things are going to go if she doesn't get her act together and do what she's supposed to. I've told her myself that if she doesn't get things together for herself, she will be redoing 3rd grade. The mounds of papers within her desk showed D and I today that she's NOT ready to go into 4th grade. She's really irresponsible and she makes too many poor decisions. D and I have decided that she is going to redo 3rd grade due to her lack of give a damn. She's obviously NOT ready for 4th grade, and Ms. Stinziano definitely understands and even agrees with our choice for Claire. If she can't master these topics and be responsible, she isn't going to do well at all in 4th grade and begin to rebel even more toward school.

  1. wow...I can relate...and you did the "right thing" marching into that classroom. I am visualizing a typical student like her right now, and YES they need organization skills and responsibilities or they will not be successful. Sometimes children need the wake up call of retention to get the message, however make sure that doesn't backfire with the "older student in the classroom" becoming the boss. She right now just wants to have friends...typical of a 3rd grader, but you are absolutely right that she needs to focus on getting the subject. 3rd grade is so important for rhis and you're right about if she doesn't get it now, she'll only have a harder time next year. BAG UP ALL THOSE TOYS OF HERS until she begins being more honest with you. lol your life may be miserable for the next couple of years.....but life will be more enjoyable when she's older! HANG IN THERE...raising children is a PAIN in the BUTT. You love them but they NEED your discipline and guidance...and they may HATE you for years....but it'll work out in the end. Rachael blamed me for everthing wrong in her life.....actually went to college in California to get away from me....and from age 10-24 hated me!!! But finally she's realized if I had not given her grief all her life she would not have been successful! She even asked me to drive cross country with her when she moved from Florida to California....IMAGINE THAT...going from hating me to being stuck in a car for DAYS! lol We had a great time and bonded to where now she has become my most considerate and affectionate child!
Well...hopefully this story will make you quit crying about how mean you have to be to Claire...but what ever it takes...you have to do!
    good luck
    Aunt Kerry :)
